More highlights from Arbor Day...
The next time you visit Crosswinds Marsh you will notice some changes! Wayne County Parks is very happy to have had the opportunity to partner again this year with the Wayne County Airport Authority, Davey Tree & Landscaping, Wayne County Soil Conservation District, Green Toe Gardens, Huron Clinton Metropark Authority, Wayne County Department of Public Services, Smith JJR, Taylor Garden Club, Sumpter Township, Renton Junior High and GESU Catholic School for Arbor Day.
Wonderful additions to our park from this event include a butterfly garden, a wildflower garden, butterfly benches, and beehives. Students from GESU Catholic School and Renton Junior High helped plant native plants in the gardens and raised and released native Painted Lady butterflies. The students also learned the importance of pollinator insect species in nature and agriculture.
The beehives are placed in a location away from main trails. Honey bees are generally not aggressive insects. They do not seek out people to sting. If they are buzzing around you it's most likely that they're checking if you're a flower. Once they realize you are not, and most importantly you're not swatting at them, they will just fly away. If you are near their hive, they may become aggressive because they see you as a potential danger to their hive and queen. You will not encounter our hives by hiking on our trails, but if you do see the hives, stay away from them. Proper precautions such as gloves and veil must be worn when working with the hives. Any persons with an extreme allergy to bee or wasp stings should always carry an EpiPen with them when they hike anywhere as a precaution.

Today, more than 150 students from Gesu Catholic School and Renton Jr. High received a "hands on" science lesson at Crosswinds Marsh. They attended an Arbor Day event sponsored by Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), Wayne County, Michigan Parks and The Davey Tree Expert Company. This year’s theme was "Pollinators and Partners." Not only did the students learn about trees, but also sustainability; the important role of wildflowers, butterflies, bees and other insects in the ecosystem; and the value of wetlands.
Today, the Consulado de México en Detroit, MI; Visit Detroit's Michael O'Callaghan; Aeromexico's Jorge Goytortua; Pure Michigan's Dave Lorenz; and Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)'s Joe Cambron helped DTW celebrate its newest airline, Aeromexico. The carrier launched new daily, nonstop service to Mexico City on April 1st. Nonstop service to Monterrey, Mexico starts May 1st.
All day, fans enjoyed meeting Chef Cat Cora at Detroit Metro Airport. The Iron Chef was in town for a cookbook signing at her new restaurant, Cat Cora's Taproom at DTW. The Taproom is owned and operated by Metro Airport Partners JV, LLC.
The numbers are in! Detroit Metropolitan Airport set a new record for origin and destination (O&D) traffic in 2016. O&D passengers are those who are not connecting at DTW, but beginning or ending their trip at the airport. This news comes on the heels of DTW announcing total passenger traffic grew to more than 34 million passengers in 2016, a year-over-year increase of nearly a million.

This afternoon, Detroit Metropolitan Airport was the site of a peaceful demonstration organized by the Women’s March on Washington-Michigan. More than 2,000 people participated in five locations throughout the McNamara Terminal. The Airport Authority Public Safety team coordinated with the organizers to ensure demonstrators’ voices could be heard, airport operations could continue without interruption and that ultimately everyone remained safe. There were no arrests.
