A huge congratulations to our interns who raised almost £2,000 for our corporate charity Children 1st. From climbing the height of a commercial flight to Zumba on the plaza and a (huge) bake sale and more, they raised almost double their target during a week of fundraising, and that money will help Children1st support children in a number of ways.
We’d like to thank everyone who got involved, including the very kind donations received from a number of firms.

Twenty groups across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife will receive funding for a range of local initiatives from Edinburgh Airport. The Community Board awards grants to projects which support health and well-being, the environment and education. Since it was established in 2012, the board has allocated nearly £640,000 to projects – and one of those successful in this round was @BoroughmuirThistleFC who are using the funds to purchase new equipment. They recently flew out of Edinburgh Airport to compete in a tournament in Sweden and we wish them well for the season! There’s more information on how you can apply for funding here:

Our interns literally hit the wall on Saturday as they completed a joint task to climb 35,000 feet to raise money for our corporate charity, Children 1st. As part of their fundraising week, they were at Edinburgh Leisure's Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho to climb the height of a commercial flight – and higher than Mount Everest. All eleven interns hit new heights as they took their turn scaling the wall, raising £668 in the process. There’s more activity planned across the terminal campus and we’ll keep you updated throughout the week.

We’re always looking to improve our special assistant service and we’re holding our first biannual Disability Community Consultation Group. It follows our Passengers with Reduced Mobility Open Day earlier this year and we’d like to discuss changes with the disabled community and any frequent PRM travellers. It’s being held at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel at the airport on Thursday the 31st of August between 10am and 2pm. Lunch will be provided. If you’d like to come along then please register in advance here: http://bit.ly/1fYsAya

Linda Drysdale - We used this amazing service several times with our son who has Autism. We would never go on a plane with him as he wouldn't cope but with the assistance I was able to plan ahead. The lovely worker sent us pictures of the airport/plane etc and was very supportive. We were able to make a social story so he was able to look at beforehand. The whole experience was stress free for my son and I can't thank this service enough. Without it we would never travel on a plane, some members of the public still don't realise that not all disabilities are physical. Shocking to hear the toilet facilities are still not disabled accessible!

Wendy Deas - I brought my dad home from East Midlands. One lovely man arrived at the plane steps with a wheelchair to collect my dad and a disabled woman. We sat in the plane for half an hour before deciding to try to walk to the main building as no further help was offered to us. It took us about 15 minutes as my dad has OCPD. I had arranged help at both ends of our flight. I don't think my dad will ever fly down to see his great grandson again as it was a nightmare.

That day we had 2 amazing ladies who helped our friends board. But the men are so grumpy. Like there doing you a favour. No its their jobs

Stefanie Douglas - This sounds like a fantastic idea to help parents travelling alone. However, I'd like to know what Edinburgh airport security policy is regarding children going through the body scanner. My 5 year old daughter was travelling with her Dad on Sunday 30th July and she was randomly chosen to go through the body scanner. She was crying her eyes out as it was daunting for her but she was still made to do it. If that wasn't bad enough, she was then made to stand and get searched by a security officer as she didn't have her hands up properly in the body scanner. I know airport security has to be strict but why make a 5 year old child do this when they are clearly upset by the experience. Lorraine Morrison James Page
