Update on Today's Evacuation:

At 4:30 pm today a UPS harmonic filter in the server room of the terminal building failed. This resulted in some smoke which caused the smoke detector to activate. As a result WAA protocols were followed and the building was evacuated.

Winnipeg Fire crews responded quickly and assessed the situation. After the assessment Winnipeg Fire provided clearance for passengers and employees to re-entered the building.

Initially the understanding was that an air conditioner unit in the server room of the airport was the cause of the smoke. This was because work was being done on this unit earlier in the day. Upon further assessment it was the UPS harmonic filter in the server room that caused the smoke.

WAA apologizes for the delays and appreciates the understanding of passengers traveling through the airport today. WAA will be doing a comprehensive review of today's procedures with our airport campus partners to see where we can make improvements in the future.

Tim Buchan - Winnipeg Richardson quit making up excuses and get a deal done you charge enough to fly to pay fairly quit being greedy and start caring about our safety not how much money u can make.
Stella Chernecki - This absolutely happened because the workers are on strike and the airport is bringing in unqualified people to do their jobs. Shame on you Winnipeg Airport!!
Carmina Stolz - After a quick management meeting a more management friendly description of the failure.......shocking. Say what you want if this happened before the strike even if the maintenance didn't prevent it, the right employees would have minimized it!! Quite classy how you throw in the fact you had a contractor in earlier in the day to do your unappreciated employees jobs. Congratulations on embarrassing the WAA name, yourselves (management), and the board of directors who for some reason allow you to continue to do it!
Colin Ballantyne - hope your review will include a fair contract for your employees that are the back bone of this company, real shame the managers have no idea the real work that goes on behind the scenes, should put CEO/ plowtruck operator Barry Rempel out on the field and see how it goes
3 days ago
Bruce Parker - But our own people fixed it cause WAA always follows ESA agreement at all times and would not contract it out. Oh I forgot they just lie to everyone that they don't contract out or care about their loyal employees
3 days ago
Jude Rogers - The reason the airport worked well from the beginning was Your qualified, loyal employees that worked hard at getting everything working , be fair and get back to the table !!!!
Tracy Madill - Geez, I wonder if this happened because the qualified WAA tradesmen were not the ones that were working on the equipment ?? Get your people back to work with a fair deal so your airport can get back to a safe place!
Jessica Klym - Get back to the table and negotiate a fair contract. If our members were at work doing preventative maintenance this whole thing could have been avoided.

This afternoon, an air conditioning unit failed which generated smoke and triggered an alarm. Out of precaution, we evacuated the building until the situation could be fully assessed. We have now completed our assessment, and the evacuation is over.

Visitors and travellers are coming back into the building as we return to normal operations and get you on your way! Apologies for the interruption, and thank you for your patience.

Joanne Duthie Bjornson - Please get back to the negotiating table with your striking workers. Perhaps having maintenance workers working vs picketing could have prevented this. Maybe now that operations are NOT business as usual, there will be some incentive to the employer to get back to the bargaining table.
John Neufeld - Systems requiring routine maintenance tend to fail if the maintenance doesn't happen. Maybe you should end the strike and get your equipment serviced by pro's who know the systems well.
Rob Newton - Business as usual? Get the people who know how to prevent these issues back to work!

Wendy Hall - Imagine if you only had your employees back at work to help solve this matter.

Marla Diane - Absolutely disappointed with the handling of what appeared to be a fire evacuation. YWG I hope you review your safety and communication policies and emergency responses.

Tracy James - Every door was letting people in except ours. Also - we were communicated to THREE TIMES that we no longer had to evacuate, then yelled at by another employee to get out. Excellent customer service skills.

Samantha Dawson - Thanks for posting on Facebook but pass the message on to security. We're all still standing outside

Q2 results are in and it is another strong quarter for WAA. Passenger numbers are up 8.8% and revenues are up as well compared to Q2 last year. These results bring WAA a step closer to being in a break even financial position since opening the terminal in October 2011 - http://www.waa.ca/me...-quarter-results
