🌎🌳On this Earth Day, meet Alain Girard, who is responsible for implementing and maintaining our environmental management system (EMS) at YQB.
"I like to think about protecting the environment in the broader context of sustainable development. It is important to consider the impacts of an airport's daily activities on the environment, but also on neighboring communities, society and the economy in general. On the airport site, I raising awareness is a personal mission so that everyone takes ownership of the concept of sustainable development and efficiency in the use of resources. These concepts have been implemented throughout the various phases of construction of the new international terminal that uses geothermal energy, automated lighting and a heat recovery system to minimize our energy consumption.
I rigorously monitor the impact of our activities on surface and groundwater, soil integrity, recycling, air quality, energy use and the soundscape. By knowing exactly our environmental impacts, we can propose innovative measures to constantly improve our practices. In recent years, we have, among other things, included more partners in our noise management committee, offered several thousand trees to the citizens of L'Ancienne-Lorette, decontaminated the soils of several parcels of land on the site and installed a dozen hives to help preserve bee populations and pollinate crops and surrounding flora. All this leads me to intervene on the airport site in its entirety and to collaborate with the various services of YQB, our partners and the citizens in a perspective of transparency, continuous improvement and conservation of resources.
All of these efforts have contributed to achieving Level 1 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) and we have passed the audit for the Level 2 certification that we will receive formally from ACA in the coming days, which implies that our future efforts in energy efficiency will be recognized internationally.
